For the first time, this beautifully illustrated book examine how the visual arts have been inspired by the stories about Alice, starting with Carroll's original sketches and John Tenniel's illustrations, and leading up to surrealist paintings, sculpture, films, photography, cartoons and contemporary art installations.

The essays contained in the book, written by people who are leading experts in their field, take a new look at the life and work of Lewis Carroll, including a new story written specially for the occasion by Carol Mayor.

The exhibition includes works by artists such as Fiona Banner, Peter Blake, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Anna Gaskell, Dan Graham, Yayoi Kusama, René Magritte, Sally Mann, Paul Nash, Adrian Piper and Annelies Strba.

The catalogue is curated by Gavin Delahunty and Christoph Schulz. Organized jointly with the Tate Liverpool, the exhibition is based on Lewis Carroll's famous stories which, during the course of 150 years, have not only become classics of children's literature but also an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration for artists, writers, film producers and creative talent of all kinds.
